Cimatu resigns as Chief of the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

MANILA โ€“ Malacanang confirmed Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Roy Cimatu’s resignation due to health issues on Friday.

DENR Undersecretary Jim Sampulna has been named officer-in-charge of the department, according to acting presidential spokeswoman and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles.

In a statement, Nograles said, “We wish Secretary Cimatu good health as he transitions from his decades-long and excellent service in government to private life.”

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea told Cimatu that his resignation had been accepted effective immediately in a letter from the President’s Office dated February 17.

Cimatu resigned on Monday after serving in the department since May 2017, when President Rodrigo Duterte appointed him to replace former Secretary Gina Lopez, whose appointment was denied by the Commission on Appointments.

Cimatu is a former Philippine Army Brigade Commander and the 29th Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

He was also the country’s Special Presidential Envoy to the Middle East, holding the title of Ambassador at the time.

On top of his role as DENR secretary, Cimatu was chosen as a supervisor of the government’s increased pandemic response tactics in Cebu City during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

In the meantime, Nograles confirmed the appointment of Benny Antiporda, a former DENR Undersecretary, as Senior Deputy Administrator of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), to succeed Abraham Bagasin.

“We wish Senior Deputy Administrator Antiporda well as NIA advances the government’s national irrigation program toward farm sector growth,” he added.
