Canada imposes sanctions on Russia as a result of the Ukraine crisis.

TRENTON, ONTARIO — On Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced penalties against Russia, calling the country’s recognition of two Ukrainian separatist regions as separate republics “illegal” and “unacceptable.”

At a press conference, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Canada “strongly condemns” Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions in Luhansk and Donetsk.

“Make no mistake about it, this is another invasion of a sovereign state, and it is completely unacceptable,” he said. “Russia’s reckless provocation poses a threat to global security and peace.”

The “first round” of penalties, according to Trudeau, includes a restriction on Canadians doing business with Luhansk and Donetsk.

Canadians are also prohibited from buying Russian debt and from doing business with two Russian institutions.

Canada will also penalize all Russian parliament members who voted to recognize the two breakaway territories, according to Trudeau.

He also stated that Canada is sending 460 troops to Ukraine.

Under the cover of “peacekeeping,” Putin dispatched soldiers to Luhansk and Donetsk on Monday. The two regions are not under the administration of the Ukrainian government.

Russian lawmakers also gave Putin the authority to employ military force outside of Russia, putting his stamp of approval on army deployment.

The United States and the United Kingdom have imposed sanctions on Russia, and Germany has announced that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, which was intended to quadruple the flow of Russian gas to Germany, will be halted.

Over 440 sanctions have been issued by Canada in response to Russia’s activities in Crimea.

In February 2014, the Russian military entered the Crimean Peninsula, and the following month, Russian President Vladimir Putin legally divided the peninsula into two independent federal territories of Russia.
