PH is ‘better off’ preparing to escape the pandemic, according to a vax expert.
MANILA, Philippines — Dr. Rontgene Solante, a member of the Vaccine Expert Panel, said the Philippines is now “better off” equipped to exit the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
“I believe we are in the middle of that process right now. Our thinking is that we can hopefully be done with this pandemic, that we can be done with this pandemic, that we can be done with this pandemic, that we can be done with this pandemic, that we can be done with this “At the Laging Handa press conference, Solante remarked.
According to Solante, the country’s ability to cope with the virus has improved as the number of active Covid-19 cases has decreased.
“We know how to deal with it [the virus], and I believe one of our points here is that we also have antiviral medicines available that are suited for this illness, such as oral antivirals and IV [intravenous] antivirals,” he added.
According to Solante, the country’s healthcare systems are prepared to handle severe Covid-19 symptoms.
“So, in my opinion, we are better prepared now than we were two or one year ago,” he added.
Solante further stressed the significance of providing additional protection against the virus to fully vaccinated Filipinos in order to avoid the high risk of severe symptoms.
“With the booster, the third dose, we will have more protection. That will provide us with stronger protection against infection, particularly severe infection, and hospitalization since you will be protected as well “he stated
The administration has been debating the country’s exit strategy from the Covid-19 pandemic and is now working on a strategic roadmap to the “new normal.”
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is expected to get the strategy in early March.
“What’s vital now is communicating the important message sa lahat na ang bakuna ay importante at mahalaga (to everybody that vaccine is important and essential) when we want to control the pandemic and shift to a new normal,” Solante added.
Solante believes that the public should be reminded of the vaccine’s benefits on a regular basis, especially now that the highly transmissible Omicron Covid-19 variant is present in the country.
“If you are left out without the vaccine among the majority who have the vaccine or have already been vaccinated, you will be the target of this Omicron variant to get the infection and continue to be a risk, puwede kang maging (you could be at) risk of getting a severe infection,” Solante explained.
The Department of Health reported 1,019 active Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, the fewest this year, bringing the overall number of confirmed cases to 3,654,284 across the country, with 56,668 active cases, 3,541,840 recoveries, and 55,776 fatalities.
