DENR should drop applicants who are damaging the environment.
MANILA, Philippines — Voters should not elect officials who do not care about the environment, according to the new chief of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Undersecretary Jim Sampulna, DENR Officer-in-Charge, cited candidates who nailed campaign materials, such as posters and tarps, to trees.
“I wish upon all of our Filipino brothers and sisters running for elective office in 2022 to avoid nailing your campaign materials on any living tree,” Sampulna said in a statement on Saturday.
“As a result, I’m pleading with our voters, particularly our voters, not to vote for candidates who are killing our environment,” he continued.
Nailing, screwing, or stapling into trees damages the bark and punctures the insides, experts say, which can slow growth and make trees more susceptible to disease.
Despite the lack of a law, Sampulna said the DENR is also opposed to single-use plastics.
“For that, we’ll need some law” (ban on single-use plastic). We are already campaigning for it, despite the fact that there is no legislation on the subject,” he stated.
Sampulna took over for Roy Cimatu, who stood aside due to health issues.
“Secretary Cimatu’s actions had a great impact on the Filipino people, and I plan to carry on what he started,” Sampulna added. “What I can promise is that in the next four months, we will implement policies that will benefit the Filipino people.”
Cimatu’s efforts include the ongoing repair of Manila Bay and the ongoing rehabilitation of Boracay Island.
“We can now appreciate Manila Bay’s beauty.” Only about 500 to 600 meters of Manila Bay have yet to be covered in dolomite sand. “I aim to keep working on that initiative because it is our promise to our dear President,” Sampulna stated.
He stated there are policies and guidelines that must be followed when it comes to open-pit mining.
“There is a misconception that if it’s open-pit, it’s damaging. However, even before the project begins, there is a recovery plan in place, and the extent of environmental harm has been assessed. After their operations, it will be restored,” he stated.
