PAMPANGA’S CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The shellfish prohibition in Bataan, which was raised on Nov. 6, 2021, is still in place, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

Shellfish samples taken from nine Bataan municipalities tested positive for the red tide toxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning, according to BFAR Bulletin No. 3.

Those raised and gathered in the towns of Hermosa, Orani, Samal, Abucay, Balanga City, Pilar, Orion, Limay, and Mariveles are included by the ban.

“Until the toxicity level has gone below the regulation limit, the public is recommended to refrain from consuming, gathering or harvesting, shipping, and marketing shellfish from the coastal waters of Bataan,” BFAR National Director Eduardo Gongona stated in an alert.

For shellfish to be safe for human eating, the legal limit is 60 unit grams of toxin per 100 grams of shellfish meat.

Fish is safe to eat as long as it is fresh and the gills and intestines have been removed before cooking.
