MANILA, Philippines — On Monday, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos instructed all unit commanders to scrutinize their subordinates’ mobile phones and other gadgets to discover who is addicted to ‘e-sabong’ (online cockfighting).

“Ilang beses ko nang sinabi na pinagbabawalan ko kayo na maglaro niyang ‘e-sabong’ or ‘online sabong’ (I have already informed you how many times that you are prohibited from partaking in ‘e-sabong or online sabong’) and our Chief-of-Staff caught one (playing) inside camp yesterday (Sunday). That is a problem. “If you’re into it, we’ll make sure you stop,” he stated immediately after the Camp Crame flag-raising ceremony.

Carlos advised policemen once again not to gamble (online) while on duty.

“If you’re playing games that aren’t related to our work, please put them down. Huwag kayong magalit sa amin, huwag kayong magalit sa amin. Ang naninigurado na di kayo mapahamak ay kami. (Please don’t be offended.) We just want to make sure you don’t get yourself into any difficulty), “Added he.

Carlos warned police officials that racking up debts from this vice of up to PHP3 million is no little problem, and that they may be forced to engage in criminal activity in order to pay it off.

Checking police personnel’ phones for this purpose, according to the PNP commander, will not infringe their rights.

Carlos issued a warning to police personnel who gamble online or engage in any form of gambling while on duty.

He went on to say that even when they are not on duty, police officers are not allowed to gamble.

Pat. Glenn Angoluan, a rookie police officer, was arrested on February 16 after leading a series of robbery crimes in Laguna and Batangas.

The defendant committed the offenses as a result of his ‘e-sabong’ addiction, according to the investigation.
