Duterte appoints Abu as the new head of the Philippine Coast Guard.

Vice Adm. Artemio Abu has been named the next Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte (PCG).

Abu’s appointment takes effect on Monday, according to a Facebook post by the PCG.

Abu graduated from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) in 1992 and most recently served as the Commander of the Maritime Safety Services Command (MSSC) and the Task Force Commander of the PCG Task Force Kaligtasan sa Karagatan—a unit that enforces laws and regulations on the safety of life and property at sea within Philippine waters, according to the statement.

“He is a nobleman from Barangay Luta Sur, Malvar, Batangas, and a graduate of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a master’s degree in marine management,” the PCG stated.

Abu was also Commander of the PCG District Southern Visayas, PCG District Southern Tagalog, and the Coast Guard Education, Training, and Doctrine Command, according to previous reports (CGETDC).

Abu also obtained the “Command at Sea” badge as the commanding commander of numerous PCG warships.

“At the national level, all units that CG Vice Admiral Abu commanded, both ashore and afloat, got the honor of ‘Best Unit of the Year,'” according to the PCG.

Abu was named Commander of the PCG Task Force Taal during the Taal Eruption in 2020, where the PCG was promoted as a “uniformed, maritime, and humanitarian service of the country.”

It was announced in 2021 that Abu had been named a “Distinguished Cavalier Awardee” for 2021 in the field of Coast Guard operations by the PMA.

According to the PCG, “the aforementioned award is the highest accolade awarded to PMA alumni for their remarkable achievements in the field of government service.”

The appointment of Abu was verified by Malacaang, which stated that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte signed his appointment on February 28.

“We are convinced that CG Vice Admiral Abu will lead the PCG to greater heights in its mission of maritime law enforcement, maritime search and rescue, marine environmental protection, and maritime safety and security,” stated Cabinet Secretary and Acting Presidential Spokesperson Karlo Nograles.
