WASHINGTON, D.C. — In the midst of Russia’s ongoing assault on Ukraine, US President Joe Biden told his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday that the US will retain its support.

In a readout of a phone chat between the two leaders, Biden highlighted Washington’s “continuing solidarity for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression,” as well as “sustained” shipments of “security assistance, economic support, and humanitarian relief,” according to the White House.

“The leaders discussed how the US, in collaboration with its allies and partners, is working to hold Russia responsible, including through sanctions that are already having an impact on the Russian economy,” the statement said. “The leaders discussed Russia’s increased strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine, including today’s explosion near the Holocaust memorial at Babyn Yar.”

Separately, Zelenskyy stated on Twitter that he discussed “anti-Russian sanctions and defense assistance to Ukraine” with Biden, whom he praised for the US’ support.

“As soon as possible, we must halt the aggressor,” he continued.

The world community has been outraged by Russia’s war on Ukraine since it began last Thursday, with the EU, UK, Canada, Japan, and the US imposing a slew of economic penalties on Moscow.

According to UN data, at least 136 civilians have been murdered in Ukraine, including 13 children, and 400 more have been injured, including 26 children.

According to the International Organization for Migration, some 660,000 individuals have fled Ukraine to neighboring nations.
