CEBU CITY, Philippines – Mayor Michael Rama said the city administration here on Wednesday began distributing PHP5,000 cash assistance to families whose homes were devastated when Typhoon Odette slammed Cebu in December last year.

Instead of handing out relief at Cebu City Hall, Rama said they chose the house-to-house strategy to learn more about the victims’ other needs more than two months after the cyclone devastated thousands of homes and businesses.

Apart from cash help for families, Portia Basmayor, head of the city’s Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS), said they want to know what issues people have.

“What if, after our PHP5,000 assistance, they still have a problem?” The city will deal with it. Aside from the PHP5,000, we will supply a solution. Because they may have received PHP5,000 but not rice, we will also provide it,” Basmayor explained.

She pointed out that the DSWS had dispatched 12 staff in addition to the cash aid to deal with additional issues.

She added that the DSWS officials will check to see if persons on the list truly deserve government assistance, which will be determined following an examination of their damaged dwellings.

“It’s also a validation of the extent of the damage to the residence so that we can see, provide, or meet the needs of the beneficiaries,” Basmayor added.

The fifth round of assistance, worth PHP90.37 million, was distributed to 18,074 families in the barangays of Basak San Nicolas (3,275), Bulacao (2,808), Buot (401), Ermita (1,214), Inayawan (3,445), Lusaran (289), Paril (331), Pasil (1,508), Punta Princesa (1,311), Quiot (2,498), Sambag 2 (394), and Po (600).

Since December 30, a total of PHP366.95 million has been distributed in aid.
