Russia announced early Monday that a “temporary” truce would be declared in the Ukrainian towns of Kyiv, Mariupol, Kharkiv, and Sumy starting at 10 a.m. local time (0700GMT) to allow for civilian evacuations.

According to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry’s Inter-Departmental Coordination Center for Humanitarian Response in Ukraine, the humanitarian situation in several Ukrainian cities has drastically worsened.

The temporary cease-fire would be in place in the cities of Kyiv, Mariupol, Kharkiv, and Sumy, according to the statement, which said that French President Emmanuel Macron had requested the opening of a humanitarian corridor from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

The humanitarian corridor would be monitored by unmanned aerial vehicles, according to the statement, which also stated that relevant UN, OSCE, and Red Cross agencies have been briefed on the development.

“We urge that Ukraine meet all criteria for the formation of humanitarian corridors in certain directions, as well as secure the safe and orderly evacuation of civilians and foreign nationals,” the statement added.

The international community has reacted angrily to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States, among others, placing a variety of economic penalties on Moscow.

According to UN data, at least 364 people have been killed and 759 more have been injured in Ukraine since Russia launched a war against the Eastern European country on February 24, with the exact toll expected to be much higher.

According to the UN refugee agency, more than 1.5 million people have fled Ukraine to neighboring nations.
