MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced Friday that degassing from the Taal Volcano’s main crater has been “noticeably” more active in recent days.

Phivolcs claimed in a Facebook post that sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from Taal Volcano had been increasing since March 6, hitting 15,900 tonnes on March 9.

Over the Taal Volcano, an Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) has been maintained, indicating that abrupt steam or gas-driven explosions, volcanic quakes, small ashfall, and fatal expulsions of volcanic gas may occur, posing a threat to areas within and surrounding the Taal Volcano Island (TVI).

Phivolcs has reported eight volcanic earthquakes in the last 24 hours, including four volcanic tremor episodes lasting 2 to 8 minutes and three low-frequency volcanic earthquakes.

Movements or eruptions of magma from the volcano generate volcanic earthquakes.

The lake’s upwelling of hot volcanic fluids resulted in 1,200-meter-high plumes.

Entry within the TVI, Taal’s permanent risk zone, should be absolutely restricted, especially in the vicinity of the main crater, Daang Kastila fissure, Phivolcs cautions the public.

In the event of additional instability, local government officials are advised to examine and reinforce the preparation of previously evacuated barangays around Taal Lake.
