For the second day, SoKor’s new Covid-19 cases had surpassed 350K.
SEOUL โ Daily Covid-19 cases in South Korea remained above 350,000 for the second day in a row on Sunday, as the country grappled with the Omicron variant’s rapid growth.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the country recorded 350,190 new Covid-19 infections, including 350,157 local cases, bringing the overall caseload to 6,556,453. (KDCA).
Due to less testing on the weekend, the total dipped from an all-time high of 383,664 on Saturday.
The Omicron type is spreading at breakneck speed, with daily infections reaching 300,000 for the first time on Wednesday, barely a week after they surpassed 200,000. On Saturday, the total number of cases surpassed 6 million, up from 5 million in just three days.
As the number of instances of Covid-19 increased, so did the number of deaths and critically ill people.
According to the KDCA, the country recorded 251 more Covid-19 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 10,395. A death rate of 0.16 percent was recorded.
The number of extremely unwell virus patients increased to 1,074 from 1,066 the day before. For the sixth day in a row, the total surpassed 1,000.
The omicron wave is expected to climax in the coming weeks, according to health officials, with a weekly average of daily virus cases reaching up to 370,000.
The number of dangerously ill Covid-19 patients is expected to soar by the end of March or early April, according to health experts, with some predicting that the number could rise by 50-100 each day in the next weeks.
The government claims that the current medical system can handle up to 2,500 critically ill virus patients, but experts are concerned about a potential hospital bed scarcity.
In the midst of the omicron wave, the government has turned its priority to treating critical cases and preventing deaths, abandoning its stringent contact tracing program, which was successful in halting the virus’s spread early in the epidemic.
To avoid hospitals becoming overburdened with Covid-19 patients, it encouraged the use of fast antigen self-test kits and at-home therapy.
Beginning Monday, medical professionals’ quick antigen test results will be approved for officially confirming Covid-19 infections.
Except for those from Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, and Myanmar, fully vaccinated South Koreans and foreign tourists from abroad do not need to remain in self-quarantine for seven days starting March 21.
