Lacson: PH must be prepared for spillover from the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson of the Partido Reporma stated on Saturday that the Philippines must be properly prepared for a possible spillover of the Russian-Ukraine crisis to Asia.
Since supporting the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the presidential candidate stated, the country must walk the words.
He stated that this includes allowing allies such as the United States to use the country’s facilities.
“Nagpirma na tayo sa United Nations General Assembly resolution na nakikiisa tayo sa ibang bansa sa pagkondena sa Russian invasion of Ukraine. So ang ating salita dapat lamang na sundan natin sa gawa. If the Philippines’ facilities are in short supply, mapa-dagat lupa o ere, tama lang yan (We signed a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.) As a result, we must walk the talk. If our facilities are required, whether on land, at sea, or in the air, that is only proper) “In a statement, he said.
Lacson, the chair of the Senate Committee on National Defense and Security, has called on the Philippine government to prepare for the conflict’s consequences as early as February.
He highlighted that we are already seeing the economic impacts of the battle, with petrol costs already increasing.
While hopeful that the Russia-Ukraine crisis does not escalate into a nuclear war, Lacson believes that the Philippines should be prepared for any eventuality.
“Mabuti rin naka-ready tayo kesa mabigla tayo (Being prepared is preferable to being startled),” he stated.
He further noted that the current circumstance demonstrates the importance of having partners who can assist in ensuring our security against external threats.
“Sa akin lagi tayong consistent dito na mainam na meron tayong kaalyado pagdating sa ating security, external threat sa atin,” Lacson said.
Measures to combat corruption
Meanwhile, Lacson stated that undercover operatives posing as job applicants will be used to catch extorting government personnel.
If he wins the May 9 elections, he says this will be one of the first steps he takes to combat corruption.
Such extreme measures, according to Lacson, will keep even the most hardened bureaucrats on their toes for fear of being caught and penalized.
“In the government bureaucracy, we might be able to field operatives who will pose as applicants… hanggang matanim sa isipan ng government employees and officials na delikado tayo, baka ang kinikikilan natin ay operative (In the bureaucracy, we might be able to field operatives who will pose as applicants in order to catch mulcting employees.) Because they don’t know if the candidate they’re extorting money from is a secret spy, the crooked staff will be on their toes shortly) “Added he.
When Lacson was in charge of the Philippine National Police from 1999 to 2001, he said he did this to get rid of the “kotong culture” in the force.
This will align with Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III’s and his vice presidential candidate’s campaign theme of correcting the government’s faults (Aayusin ang Gobyerno, Aayusin ang Buhay ng Bawat Pilipino).
He also stated that he intends to get the Plunder Law reviewed in order to address its flaws and make it easier to apply so that the corrupt are discouraged from stealing from public coffers.
Lacson, who said corruption is one of the scourges that threaten to ruin his day, especially when he hears of Filipinos who have been victims of it, reiterated that if elected President, he will set the tone for the government on his first day in office by signing a waiver of his rights under the Bank Secrecy Act and launching a massive, long-term internal cleansing of the bureaucracy.
He reaffirmed his pledge to prioritize transparency in government affairs, particularly vaccine procurement to combat the Covid danger.
“The basis of combatting corruption is transparency,” he stated.
