In the face of rising fuel prices, the PRRD ‘endorses’ bus, MRT, and LRT travel.

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte has a cost-cutting idea in the face of soaring oil prices caused by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis: take the train.

Taking the MRT, LRT, or bus, according to Duterte, is a lot more cost-effective way to go about Metro Manila.

“You better learn from our experience now to ride itong mga (this) MRT, LRT because that is the sole functional move — to utilize to transfer people from one location to another, or from one point to another,” he said in a prerecorded Speech to the People aired Tuesday morning.

He emphasized that rising fuel prices and basic goods could only be afforded by the wealthy.

As the economy recovers from the Covid-19 outbreak, Duterte believes that no number of demonstrations would change the fact that Russia’s assault of Ukraine is driving up petroleum costs even more.

“I hope you understand that even if you protest, that is already the price of oil,” he remarked.

He urged the public not to hold grudges against the government because of rising fuel prices, emphasizing that the issue affects the entire world economy, not just the Philippines.

“Huwag kayo ho — kayong mga driver pati everyone, huwag kayong maghihinakit na tumataas ang presyo, huwag kayong maghihinakit na tumataas ang presyo, huwag kayong maghihinakit na tumataas ang pre (Drivers and everyone else should not be unhappy with the government because of rising fuel prices; the entire world is affected by this situation),” he continued.

Consumers will undoubtedly face increased prices until Russia’s incursion ends, according to Duterte.

“Matagal pa matapos, hirap na hirap tayo as long as this quarrel lasts.” “Kaya ‘yung mga ano ninyo na walang — walang langis, ganoon, i-reduce (it will be a long time before this is ended; we will continue to suffer; therefore, simply cut your oil consumption),” he added.

He expressed optimism that the warring parties might reach an agreement.

“Ang global market factors natin is bantayan natin (Let us monitor global market factors) and I hope that this war, which he described as “dumb,” would come to an end, he remarked.

Meanwhile, Duterte emphasized the Philippines’ neutrality in the continuing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“And as long as they don’t go beyond the 12-mile limit, we shouldn’t have any problems,” says the narrator. However, we are aware that they are present in many locations. That is exactly how the world works today, right now,” he remarked.

Duterte ordered the Department of Finance (DOF) to enhance the monthly fuel subsidy for impoverished households from PHP200 to PHP600 per household on Monday.

He claims that the PHP200 monetary assistance previously allowed by the DOF is “insufficient” to support even a household of three.

The Philippines joined the rest of the world in praying for a “quick and peaceful” settlement to the Russian-Ukraine conflict.

In response to the growing crisis, the government has put in place mitigation and contingency strategies.
