A task team will be formed by the Comelec to combat vote-buying.
MANILA, Philippines — On Tuesday, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced the formation of a task group to investigate claims of vote-buying.
“The Commission will establish a Task Force to deal with allegations and concerns.” Certainly, the Comelec can examine motu proprio (on its own). The Comelec can always tell its field staff to send us a report. Commissioner George Erwin Garcia said in a press conference after the end-to-end presentation of the Election Day Automated Election System (AES) at the Diamond Hotel in Manila that “we will have a task force for us to immediately take action.”
Garcia, on the other hand, cautioned people to be cautious when reporting vote-buying.
“Politicians can always claim the Peera doctrine, as you know.” Technically, the campaign time for local candidates has not yet begun. We will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who is suspected of purchasing votes. We are so serious about this election that we need to level the playing field. “Those who violate the Omnibus Election Code will be punished,” he added.
The Peera doctrine refers to a 2009 Supreme Court decision that overturned the ban on premature campaigning.
This means that campaign standards do not cover expenses incurred by candidates prior to the start of the campaign period.
Meanwhile, Garcia advised anyone who witnesses such behavior to submit a report.
“Regardless of the people involved, as long as there is strong proof, considerable in character, we will pursue the prosecution of those who will be found guilty of vote-buying,” he stated.
According to reports, reelectionist Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla was captured on camera handing cash rewards to talent show participants during the UniTeam campaign event in Dasmarinas City.
Remulla dismissed claims of vote-buying, claiming that the campaign time for local candidates had not yet begun.
