DENR, foundation to rehabilitate mangroves in Surigao del Norte

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation, Inc. (JVOFI) have signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the repair and rehabilitation of mangroves severely damaged by Typhoon Odette in December 2021 on Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

According to a news release issued on Saturday, the JVOFI will provide PHP10 million to cover the cost of restoring and rehabilitating storm-damaged mangroves, particularly in the municipalities of Del Carmen, Dapa, General Luna, San Benito, and Socorro in Surigao del Norte, as well as the implementation of solid waste management activities on the island.

The Marine Protected Areas Support Network awarded the Del Carmen mangrove site the Para El Mar Best Mangrove Award in the Philippines in 2019.

The project will be implemented by DENR-Region 13 (Caraga), the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) in Surigao del Norte, and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Dapa.

They will identify and demarcate the 143-hectare mangrove site, as well as evaluate the best methods for plantation establishment, preservation, and upkeep.

DENR Acting Secretary Jim Sampulna and JVOFI president Reinaldo Bautista Jr. signed a Memorandum of Understanding on March 15 to conduct a three-year post-disaster restoration and rehabilitation.

Typhoon Odette wreaked havoc on the island’s agriculture, infrastructure, and ecology, as well as the mangroves planted as part of the National Greening Program.

“The cooperation understands the necessity of combating climate change as well as the need to act quickly.” “Our mangroves are more important than ever,” Sampulna stated.

It was “the beginning of our continued cooperation,” according to Bautista.

DENR Undersecretary for Policy, Planning, and International Affairs Jonas Leones, DENR-Foreign Assisted and Special Projects Service Assistant Director Maria Sabrina Cruz, Project Preparation Division Chief Conrado Bravante Jr., Region 13 Executive Director Nonito Tamayo, Environmental Management Bureau-Region 13 Director Albert Arcamo, JVOFI executive director Ma. Rosario Lopez, and Surigao del Norte PNP Executive Director Ma. Rosario Lopez attended the signing

JVOFI is a non-governmental organization that promotes the conservation, protection, and sensible management of the country’s vital ecological resources, as well as their exploitation.
