The technology ensures a healthy harvest for lettuce growers in Leyte.

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – Using an intelligent green box, a group of farmers here is reaping the benefits of modern farming, ensuring the quality harvest of high-value crops regardless of the season.

The 32-member La Granja Farmers and Agriventures Association have been harvesting at least 180 kg of fresh lettuce weekly for high-end restaurants in this city and portions of Samar through indoor farming.

“Whatever occurs, we can count on a steady supply.” I provide our customers with food that is safe, clean, and nutritional. On Thursday, Martina Reyna, farmer and proprietor of La Granja in Diit hamlet, stated, “This is a very nice technology.”

The Intelligent Green Box (IGB) is a vertical farming method of cultivating plants stacked vertically within old container trucks, which takes up less room than traditional farming.

According to the Department of Science and Technology, because this technology uses fewer resources such as water and land, it becomes a viable alternative for smart cities (DOST).

“In terms of quality, there’s a lot of improvement now that the temperature, humidity, and lights are managed,” Reyna said during a farm tour by key DOST officials, according to the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

“We expect this technology to assist Eastern Visayas in achieving food security despite the fact that the region is subjected to severe storms every year,” DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Pea stated.

The technology, according to Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla, will encourage the new generation to embrace contemporary farming.

“We must make this technology accessible to our young generation so that they can appreciate it.” “This will undoubtedly alleviate poverty and improve our children’s health,” Petilla stated.

Since it was established in September 2021 in collaboration with the DOST, the provincial government of Leyte, Eastern Visayas State University, and the farmers’ group, the 20-footer container van has been nurturing 860 lettuce plants.

“In the past, our lettuce plants were subjected to high temperatures and pest infestations. The quality was poor, and the price per kilogram was merely PHP200. We can now sell our lettuce for PHP400 per kilogram thanks to indoor cultivation,” Reyna noted.

The IGB technology optimizes indoor farming operations for the region’s characteristics and allows high-value crops to be grown in a climate-controlled setting.

The project is part of the DOST’s iSTART (Innovation, Science, and Technology Accelerating Regional Technology-Based Development) program, which helps local governments establish technology-based development plans for the agriculture, manufacturing, and services sectors. Leyte is one of the experimental provinces involved in this project.

DOST will use iSTART to entice people of Metro Manila and other densely populated places to return to their home provinces or participate in new businesses and other science and technology ventures.
