There has been no volcanic tremor detected in Taal Volcano in the last 24 hours.

MANILA, Philippines โ€“ The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported Monday that no volcanic earthquake has been detected in Taal Volcano in the last 24 hours.

Additionally, the lake’s hot volcanic fluids generated 1,000-meter-high plumes. On Saturday, alert level 3 (magmatic unrest) was raised over Taal, indicating that magmatic intrusion has occurred at the main crater, potentially fueling subsequent eruptions.

“Magmatic intrusion refers to the rise of magma into the volcano’s shallower levels, which can result in additional explosions when the magma explodes due to gases contained within it or when the magma interacts with groundwater in the volcano’s shallower levels,” Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr. explained.

In contrast to tectonic earthquakes, which are caused by fault movement, volcanic earthquakes are caused by the movement or eruption of magma from the volcano.

On the other hand, volcanic plumes are columns of hot volcanic ash and gas that are ejected into the atmosphere during an explosive volcanic eruption. The height of the plume emerging from the crater indicates a weaker eruption.

Solidum previously stated that the appropriate alert level for a volcano is determined by a number of factors, including the number of recorded earthquakes, ground deformation, gas and water chemistry, and surface manifestations.

He also noted that not only the number of earthquakes is taken into account, but also the type of earthquakes, their location, depth, and energy.

Sulfur dioxide emissions from Taal Volcano reached 1,140 tonnes on March 27.

On Saturday, Ma. Antonia Bornas, Phivolcs’ chief science research specialist, said the likelihood of raising Taal Volcano’s alert level to level 4 is “not excessive.”

If no phreatomagmatic activity occurs in the next two weeks, it may be placed on alert level 2 (increasing unrest), she said. Phreatomagmatic eruptions are the result of magma and water interacting.

Phivolcs has advised residents of Taal Volcano Island (TVI) and high-risk barangays of Bilibinwang and Banyaga, Agoncillo and Boso-boso, Gulod and eastern Bugaan East, Laurel, Batangas to evacuate due to the potential dangers of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami if subsequent stronger eruptions occur.

Phivolcs also emphasized the importance of prohibiting entry into TVI and the barangays of Agoncillo and Laurel, as well as the prohibition of all activities on Taal Lake.
