MANILA – The emergency use authorization (EUA) for the fourth dose of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine for the elderly and immunocompromised has not been amended.

The Department of Health (DOH) stated in a Viber message to reporters that it is still “in the process of amending the vaccines’ EUA to accommodate the immunocompromised and elderly population for a possible fourth dose or second dose booster” in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Additionally, the Health Technology Assessment Council will conduct a review of the matter and make recommendations,” the DOH added.

Last week, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire confirmed that they had submitted an application to the FDA to amend the EUA in response to the Vaccine Experts Panel’s recommendation (VEP).

Dr. Rontgene Solante, a VEP member, stated that a fourth dose or second booster may be required only for the elderly and immunocompromised, but not for the general population.

Dr. Edsel Salvana, a member of the DOH-Technical Advisory Group, stated that the evidence supporting the need for a fourth dose is preliminary, and the United States has approved its administration only for immunocompromised individuals.
