MANILA, Philippines — On Tuesday, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra announced that his office will support the “Kontra Bigay” Task Force of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in its fight against vote-buying.

“For the Comelec’s inter-agency task force against vote-buying, I want to form a Department of Justice (DOJ) composite team composed of the National Prosecution Service, National Bureau of Investigation, Public Attorney’s Office, and DOJ Action Centers (main and field offices),” Guevarra stated.

“Given the importance of the next elections to the nation’s survival and recovery,” he said, “I will direct the DOJ contingent to give this campaign the greatest priority in the next 40 days.”

Commissioner George Garcia of the Comelec announced last week that the commission will seek assistance from the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission to ensure a clean and orderly election in May.

Giving, offering, or promising “money or anything of value in order to encourage anyone or the general public to vote for or against any candidate or withhold his vote in an election” is illegal under the Omnibus Election Code.
