The SpaceX Starlink will arrive in Manila for the first time in Southeast Asia.
MANILA, Philippines โ Elon Musk’s SpaceX low-orbit satellite Starlink will shortly arrive in Manila, providing quicker and more dependable internet access.
At Manila City Hall on Tuesday, Manila Mayor and Aksyon Demokratiko presidential candidate Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso met with SpaceX senior manager for government affairs Rebecca Hunter and SpaceX partner-representative for the Philippines and other Asian countries Raymond Garcia.
“Maraming salamat na binigyan nila ng pagkakataon yung Maynila, mukhang mag-uumpisa na yung Maynila, mukhang mag-uumpisa na yung Maynila, mukhang mag-uumpisa na yung Maynila, muk (I thank them that they gave Manila the opportunity, I think it will start soon). “I’m ecstatic that Starlink is coming to Manila,” remarked Domagoso.
This was the country’s first meeting of Starlink delegates.
“The good news is that this will be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia,” Domagoso remarked.
SpaceX, or Space Exploration Technologies Corp., is an American aerospace company that has launched over 1,700 Starlink satellites into orbit.
Elon Musk, an American billionaire, founded it.
While most existing satellite internet services are provided by single geostationary satellites orbiting the world at a distance of about 35,000 kilometers, Starlink is a constellation of several satellites orbiting the earth at a distance of around 550 kilometers and covering the whole globe.
Starlink is expected to be active in Manila within the next several months, according to Domagoso.
He currently believes SpaceX should first comply with national government regulatory agencies including the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
He did say, though, that Manila is ready for Starlink at any time.
“Iniintay lang namin yung mga regulatory agencies to process yung sa side ng Starlinks SpaceX, after that, Manila can deploy roughly 896 dishes for 896 barangays to make it available ito sa (We’re simply waiting for regulatory agencies to process on the side of Starlink SpaceX.)” After that, Manila will be able to deploy approximately 896 dishes to serve the city’s 896) barangays,” Domagoso said.
He said the city plans to purchase Starlink service for its 104 public elementary and high schools, two public universities, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and the Universidad de Manila, seven district hospitals, about 15 police stations and headquarters, and the Manila City Hall and its satellite offices in the city.
If the idea is approved, Domagoso said the university belt sections of the city will be next.
“This Starlink low-orbit satellite can supply 110 Mbps for residential households, and it can provide up to 500 Mbps of bandwidth for businesses,” he stated.
Domagoso feels that SpaceX Starlink is less expensive and faster to deploy.
“Fiber optics can take years to install, but with this, pag nag deploy ako ngayong oras na to, ngayong oras na to me internet ka na (if I install it now, you will have internet access immediately),” he stated.
He claims that no infrastructure such as communication towers is required because Starlink simply requires a gateway that can cover a large area.
“I was told initially three that can cover a large area, eh six ang itatayo nila to cover the entire Philippines so mabilis to tapos yung hinahanap na lote 60 square meters lang,” Domagoso added.
He claims that with Starlink’s low orbit satellite, even the most rural and far-flung regions may have reliable internet connectivity.
Domagoso would not disclose the actual value of their agreement with SpaceX, but he did say that each dish required to link to the satellite costs USD500.
He believes Starlink has the potential to be the country’s internet connection of the future, benefiting not only regular residents but also the country’s economy by enabling small enterprises and freelancers.
It might even be useful during natural disasters, when communications are usually an issue, according to Domagoso.
The Philippine government has also planned a meeting with representatives from SpaceX in the hopes of being the first country in the Asean region to use Elon Musk’s Starlink low-orbit satellite.
