MANILA, Philippines — Senate Secretary Myra Marie Villarica stated on Wednesday that the Senate Public Support Office (SPAO) provided medical care and health assistance to 36,997 people admitted to various public hospitals in Metro Manila in 2021.

According to Villarica, the National Kidney and Transplant Institute had 11,514 patients, the Philippine Heart Center had 11,376 patients, the Philippine Children’s Medical Center had 2,103 patients, the East Avenue Medical Center had 1,831 patients, and the Lung Center of the Philippines had 1,569 patients.

“Some of the SPAO patients are in the late stages of cancer and chronic kidney disease,” she added in a press release.

At the height of the Covid-19 outbreak, Villarica reported the Senate gave medical help to 21,755 people.

She stated that the Senate has been bolstering SPAO as its public assistance arm in order for it to continue to serve as a conduit between people and government entities.

“Senate President Sotto’s directive is clear: ease our countrymen’s sufferings by giving medical help, particularly to destitute patients, in the most effective manner possible,” Villarica continued.

Individuals who seek to take use of the Senate’s medical assistance program are issued a guarantee letter by the Department of Health, which is available at 70 public hospitals around the country, she said.

Meanwhile, Senate President Vicente Sotto III promised the people that, in addition to fulfilling its constitutional obligations, the Senate will continue to offer medicines and medical services to Filipinos.

“We have strengthened our public assistance office to meet the expanding medical and social service needs of our people. We want to be there for them during their most trying period. We are grateful for the thousands of patients who have sought assistance from our office and the senators’ offices “Sotto remarked.
