Duterte’s potential successor has similarly stated that he is “dedicated” to ending the drug problem.

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte voiced faith on Thursday that the country’s next leader would also be eager to combat the spread of illegal drugs.

This comes as Duterte stoked fears of a comeback of illegal narcotics once his tenure ends in June 2022.

“Paalis na ako (I’m getting ready to leave), yet I’m worried.” I’m not implying that basig mudaog — kinsay mudaoag nila nga (whoever wins) is inept or not the right person for the job. Because the drugs crisis may resurface once I step down, kay kaning droga either paghawa nako, mubalik ni, mubalik gyud ni. In a speech held in Lapu-Lapu City, he stated, “It will truly return, and it is approaching our shores.”

If the drug problem worsens, according to Duterte, the country will be in peril.

He expressed optimism that his successor will be as committed to fighting illegal narcotics as he is.

“I’m not implying that any of them, or even all of them, are inept. Masyadong paghambog iyan, pero ang ano ko lang (That’s arrogance, but my sentiment is), if they are truly as serious as I am in combating our country’s insurgency and drug problem. ‘Yun lang ang worry ko (That is my concern),’ remarked Duterte.

On March 21, Duterte announced that he would meet with his successor to discuss the drug problem that continues to “haunt” the country.

According to the latest Read Numbers statistics issued by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Wednesday, a total of PHP76.01 billion worth of illegal drugs have been recovered nationwide since the start of Duterte’s drug war in July 2016.

As of February 2022, 14,648 high-value targets had been apprehended.

Authorities have also apprehended 331,694 people who are involved in illegal narcotics trafficking.

Duterte reaffirmed his vow to safeguard police officers who carry out authorized anti-drug operations as part of his relentless war against illegal drugs.

“Follow your orders. I am behind you lalo na dito sa droga (especially if it is because of the conduct of the drug war),” Duterte remarked. “The cops have my word that I’ll be there to defend them and take full legal responsibility for you.”

On Tuesday, Duterte directed the PDEA to provide a copy of the government’s anti-narcotics report to human rights organizations in order to educate them about the severity of the country’s drug problem.

His recent order to the PDEA came after Amnesty International (AI), a London-based human rights organization, said in its 2020-2021 report that extrajudicial executions and other human rights violations persist in the Philippines under the cover of Duterte’s drug campaign.

The AI report on Duterte’s drug campaign was denounced as “fake” and “rehashed” by Acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar.
