MANILA, Philippines — Increased mobility as a result of looser limitations under Alert Level 1 may have contributed to an increase in index crimes such as theft.

Eduardo Ano, Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government said in a radio interview on Sunday that more people going out implies they and their institutions should be more aware. He also stated that the cops would be visible.

“Siguro naglabasan na ‘yung mga tao dahil naglabasan na ‘yung mga tao dahil naglabasan na ‘yung mga tao dah Dito sa mga malalapit sa mga mall, sa mga palengke, medyo dumami na naman ‘yung mga mandurukot natin diyan. Pickpockets are becoming more common in malls and wet markets),” Ano stated.

Murder, homicide, physical injury, and rape are among the index crimes, as are robbery, theft, kidnapping/carjacking, and cattle rustling.

Malacanang announced on Thursday that Metro Manila and 48 other areas will stay under the most lenient Alert Level 1 status until April 15.

Movement of people, regardless of age or comorbidities, is permitted under Alert Level 1, with restrictions on crowded and tight locations, as well as close contact (3Cs) settings.

Despite the relaxing of health rules, Ano urged the people to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, particularly in busy areas, to avoid becoming victims of criminals.

From November 2021 to January 2022, the PNP reported a 17 percent decline in criminal incidences in the National Capital Region, according to the PNP.

Guillermo Eleazar, a senatorial contender, and former PNP head, favors the Alert Level 1 proclamation to allow economic activity to resume.

In a statement issued on Sunday, he said that enterprises that have been affected by the Covid-19 epidemic for two years can now begin their recovery efforts, but he reminded the people to follow basic health requirements and get vaccines to avoid another outbreak.
