To combat the Covid-19 outbreak in BARMM, the government is considering special vaccination days.
MANILA, Philippines โ To address the region’s low vaccination rate, the government will host special vaccination days in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), according to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
“Mababa pa yung vaccination rate ng BARMM, Regions 12 (Soccsksargen), 7 (Central Visayas), medyo mababa pa yung immunization rate diyan.” So talagang sabay ito yung ginagawa natin both monitoring election campaign breaches and health protocols (the vaccination rate is still low, particularly in the BARMM’s Regions 12, 7, where the vaccination rate is still very low). So this is actually what we’re doing, both monitoring election campaign breaches and health protocols),” Ao said during a joint press conference held by the DILG, the Commission on Elections (Comelec), and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Camp Crame.
He claimed that this is why they have been closely monitoring campaign sorties in the BARMM, claiming that this could result in an increase in instances.
The scheduled special vaccination days for BARMM have already been granted the green light by the National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19 implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., according to DILG spokesperson Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya.
“BARMM is a unique area in which we are concentrating our efforts. Only 25% of the population is fully vaccinated, which poses a significant difficulty. As a result, special immunization days will be held in BARMM. Every province in the area would be the subject of intensive government engagement through the NTF to guarantee that we, like the rest of the country, meet our target,” added Malaya, who was also present at the briefing.
He also reminded LGUs to increase booster shot administration.
He stated, “The booster shots are necessary and important, especially for the vulnerable population.”
National Task Force (NTF) Galvez said that BARMM had the lowest vaccination output among 17 areas in the country, with only 25% of its target population fully vaccinated, during President Rodrigo Duterte’s prerecorded Talk to the People, which was broadcast late Tuesday night.
Galvez stated the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health (DOH) have both expressed concern about a likely increase in Covid-19 cases in BARMM as the month-long fasting month of Ramadan approaches.
Some Muslims, according to Galvez, are refusing to be vaccinated because they believe the Covid-19 vaccines violate their religious and cultural beliefs.
The immunization phase in BARMM is also affected by geographical areas, he noted.
For example, each time the vaccination team travels to the remote districts of Tawi-Tawi and Basilan to inoculate residents in the affected areas, it will take six to seven hours of travel time.
The government, according to Galvez, is pushing for a “strategic focus on vaccinating the majority of BARMM people.”
To far, 66,230,305 Filipinos have received two major series of Covid-19 vaccines, with 12,208,931 eligible vaccinees receiving booster doses or further protection against the disease.
Polls that are ‘Covid-proofed’
Meanwhile, the polling organization is considering forming its own medical advisory board to assist in the development of faster and more responsive policies to combat the spread of coronavirus sickness in 2019. (Covid-19).
This is one of the steps aimed at “Covid-proofing our elections,” according to Commissioner Aimee Neri.
“On Election Day, we intend to put up medical desks that will attend to health-related needs of voters, particularly those in the vulnerable sector,” she said in the same briefing.
The Comelec previously stated that voters with a temperature of 37.5 degrees Celsius or more, as well as those who exhibit Covid-19 symptoms, will be able to vote in isolation polling locations (IPPs).
