MANILA, Philippines — To address complaints about a paucity of public utility buses, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) began deploying buses and trucks offering free rides along Commonwealth-Litex in Quezon City on Friday (PUBs).

MMDA Chair Romando Artes stated in a statement that the MMDA dispatched six buses and two military vehicles on the same day from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. to transport commuters to Welcome Rotunda, the Quezon City-Manila border.

“Passengers are reportedly waiting for buses along the road itself, according to sources. We will continue to use our Libreng Sakay buses as long as they are needed to assist the general population with their everyday travel “According to Artes.

He said the MMDA would work with city bus operators and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to find a “long-term solution” to the region’s lack of PUBs.

He said that, in addition to providing free rides to commuters, the scheme will also assist to minimize traffic congestion by keeping people looking for a ride off the road.

On Monday, the LTFRB announced the resumption of over a hundred routes along Commonwealth Avenue, involving over 7,000 public utility vehicles, to help alleviate long queues of customers traveling from Litex to Sandiganbayan and other portions of Commonwealth.

It also investigated United Mega Manila Bus Consortium Inc.-NAT Transport, as only about half of the 510 PUBs permitted to operate on the route were discovered to be in service.
