Caritas Philippines is asking for help with the Alay Kapwa initiative.
MANILA, Philippines – Caritas Philippines, the social action arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), reminded Filipino families of Palm Sunday, also known as Alay Kapwa Sunday, on Saturday.
As Roman Catholics around the world observe Holy Week beginning April 10, Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, national director of Caritas Philippines, pleaded for generosity from the faithful.
“As we all mark Holy Week, we would want to encourage everyone to support our Alay Kapwa initiative.” We were able to serve a hundred thousand vulnerable families with community activities last year thanks to your goodness, generosity, and compassion,” he added in a statement.
“That is why we are appealing for help from all Filipino families.” “Through pagmamalasakit, pagbabahagi, and pag-a-alay-kapwa, we can lessen, eliminate, and eradicate poverty,” the Kidapawan bishop stated.
On Palm Sunday, all second collections from masses around the country are collected for the dioceses’ Alay Kapwa initiatives and Caritas Philippines.
“As Caritas Philippines marks its 56th anniversary, we want to ensure that we leave a legacy of genuinely being the heart of the Church of the Poor by implementing long-term, high-impact initiatives for our communities through our local social action centers,” Bagaforo stated.
On the other hand, national Caritas executive secretary Fr. Antonio Labiao stated that they cannot afford to cease their initiatives from responding to critical community concerns simply because overseas donors are fatigued.
“As a result, we’ve established initiatives to increase our local resource mobilization since 2020.” Since then, we’ve learned that Filipinos share our commitment to leave no one behind, particularly in difficult circumstances,” he continued.
During COVID-19 in 2020, the Alay Kapwa solidarity gave daily food to more than 150 disadvantaged communities through Caritas Kindness Stations in more than 50 dioceses.
During the Catholic Church’s response to Typhoon Odette in 2021, about PHP114 million in Alay Kapwa donations were received by all 11 affected dioceses.
“This year, the ongoing humanitarian response aims to build brand new dwellings and give more stable means of livelihood to 11,000 families,” he stated.
“We’ve observed a substantial rise of over 4,000 Filipino families supporting our 7 Alay Kapwa Legacy Stewardship Programs in the dioceses,” Labiao noted.
Youth development, family feeding, livelihoods, and food security are among the seven initiatives, which also include humanitarian response, institutional capacity building, good governance and justice, peace, and ecology.
The Catholic Church’s solidarity program, Alay Kapwa, is primarily utilized to fund Caritas Philippines’ humanitarian, development, and advocacy initiatives, as well as the 85 Diocesan Social Action Centers.
