MANILA, Philippines — House Deputy Speaker Lito Atienza announced on Monday that he will not withdraw from the run for vice president in 2022.

Atienza previously stated that he is considering withdrawing from the vice presidential race and that he wants Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III to run alongside Pacquiao to provide a stronger challenge to the frontrunners, PFP’s Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and his Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Senator Panfilo Lacson’s offer that Atienza’s running mate, Sotto, be named Pacquiao’s common vice presidential candidate was rejected by Atienza.

He claimed that such a move would only serve to strengthen the Marcos-Duterte partnership.

Pacquiao previously stated that if and when Atienza withdraws from the 2022 race, he may choose to support his colleague Sotto.

Atienza, who is 80 years old, had knee surgery in February and has been unable to participate in campaign activities since then.
