As elections approach, the AFP ramps up operations against terrorist groups.
MANILA, Philippines — To ensure orderly and peaceful voting on May 9, the military will step up its operations against communists and local terrorist groups.
Gen. Andres Centino, chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said troops stationed across the country are on the lookout for groups that may try to prevent people from voting.
“Now, more than ever, we in the AFP implore troops deployed all over the country to remain vigilant against entities that may threaten or prevent our citizens from safely exercising their constitutional right to vote for the next leaders of our nation, including our local government executives,” Centino said in a statement released Monday.
Centino stated that the AFP, along with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), is “doing its best” to ensure that people can exercise their right to vote for their preferred leaders “without fear or intimidation” during the elections.
At the AFP Commissioned Officers Club in Camp Aguinaldo on April 8, the AFP and the PNP provided security updates during the third Joint Command Conference.
Security improvements, as well as the deployment of vote-counting machines, official ballots, and other election-related equipment, were discussed at the conference.
The directive outlines the member agencies’ rules and guidelines for conducting peace and security activities, as delegated by the Commission on Elections.
The PNP will be in charge of leading law enforcement operations, like investigations and assisting the Comelec in prosecuting election-related offenses.
In law enforcement actions in coastal or maritime areas, the PCG will take the lead.
Joint operations including the suppression of insurgency and other severe threats to national security will be led by the AFP.
The AFP, PNP, and PCG will provide protection to polling stations under Comelec Resolutions No. 10755 and No. 10743, as well as electoral materials to be used in the elections.
They will also offer security to Comelec officials, deputies, and others involved in election-related activities.
