Año and Lorenzana criticize the US report on PH human rights violations.

MANILA, Philippines – Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Eduardo Ao criticized a report by the US State Department alleging that Philippine security personnel is implicated in human rights violations on Tuesday.

“The DILG strongly condemns the US State Department’s 2021 Country Report on Human Rights Practices, which was just released on the alleged abuses by security personnel in the Philippines,” he stated.

The US report, according to Año, is just a “mere repetition of unsubstantiated accusations against Philippine security forces that were loosely picked up from traditional and social media,” and paints a very bleak picture of the country’s peace and order situation that is so far removed from the reality on the ground.

“Since 2016, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) activities at the grassroots level have resulted in a dramatic improvement in the country’s general peace and security situation. As a result, the report minimizes the hard work and sacrifice of the men and women of the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Armed Forces, who have risked their lives to carry out their sworn duty of combating criminality and illegal drugs “He made a point.

In a second statement, Secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND) Delfin Lorenzana questioned the US State Department’s claim.

“We have reservations about the (US) State Department’s report on security forces abuses. However, because the State Department appears to be so certain of its findings, we challenge it to supply us with further information so that our Commission on Human Rights, a constitutional and independent authority, can verify them and, if proven correct, punish the criminals “he stated

Lorenzana claims that these accusations are nothing more than innuendos and witch hunts without these data.

“In the worst-case scenario, the (US) State Department has succumbed to dark propaganda. And, if I may add, the AFP was just recognized as one of the government’s most trusted agencies. It didn’t get here by exploiting, torturing, and killing people, did it? “Added he.

Meanwhile, Philippine National Police commander Gen. Dionardo Carlos repeated Lorenzana’s demands, saying the US State Department must provide evidence to back up its report.

“Those are just accusations. What we’re telling you is exactly what the PNP has. That is something you respond to. It’s merely a declaration. We continually consider how we might assist development. If you have a good intention, you may portray it in such a way that it is constructive “Added he.

According to the US State Department’s 2021 Country Report on Human Rights Practices, “reliable” evidence on alleged human rights violations by Philippine security personnel was received.

According to the US State Department, “many” human rights violations have been committed “by and on behalf of the (Philippine) government and non-state actors.”

Unlawful or arbitrary deaths, reports of forced disappearances, torture, harsh and life-threatening jail conditions, and arbitrary detention are among the reported “serious” human rights violations in the country.
