Profit-taking lowers the stock index, while the peso rises.

MANILA, Philippines — After many days of advances, the main stock index fell on Thursday, but the peso rose versus the US dollar.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) fell 80.93 points to 7,061.49 points or 1.13 percent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.65%, or 24.59 points, to 3,752.54 points.

The majority of the sectoral indices likewise concluded the day in the red, with Property leading the way with a 2.16 percent drop.

Services came in second with 1.50 percent, followed by Industrial with 1.13 percent, and Holding Firms with 1.06 percent.

Mining and oil, on the other hand, increased by 2.01 percent, while financials increased by 0.99 percent.

A total of 895.46 million shares worth PHP6.04 billion were traded.

At 91 to 83, decliners outnumbered advancers, with 61 shares remaining unchanged.

“Philippine shares succumbed to profit-taking following other Asian markets, while the US traded mixed as investors absorbed a fresh batch of 1Q22 (first quarter 2022) earnings results,” said Regina Capital Development Corporation (RCDC) head of sales Luis Limlingan.

Meanwhile, the peso strengthened against the dollar, ending the day at 52.365, up from 52.49 the day before.
