CEBU CITY, Philippines – With the potential of returning to in-person classrooms in August, the Visayas Vaccination Operation Center (VVOC) issued a statement on Monday urging teachers and parents to encourage students to get vaccinated against the coronavirus illness 2019. (Covid-19).

Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, chief pathologist and VVOC spokesman for the Department of Health-Central Visayas (DOH-7) hinted at more activities to lure pupils to go to vaccination locations to acquire their vaccine.

Despite the fact that DOH-7 statistics showed an increase in the number of vaccinated youngsters, she said health officials want to make a stronger push for children and teenagers aged 11 to 17 to get vaccinated.

“Yes, there needs to be more information dissemination for the 11 to 17-year-olds. “It’s critical that parents and students, including instructors, participate in encouraging these age groups to get vaccinated, especially with the (upcoming) face-to-face sessions,” Loreche said in a letter to the media.

She stated there is a need to push for an awareness campaign, especially for school children under the age of 12, due to the city’s low alert level and people’s tendency to relax their defense against Covid-19.

She also emphasized the effectiveness of house-to-house inoculation in areas where vaccination efforts were boosted.

According to DOH-7 records, while children aged 12 to 17 are getting vaccinated, many youngsters under the age of 12 are not turning up at vaccination sites.

Only 42,709 of the 358,544 children aged 5 to 11 in Metro Cebu have been properly immunized, according to data.

On the other hand, more than 62 percent of Metro Cebu’s 338,840 children and teens aged 12 to 17 are already fully immunized.
