MANILA, Philippines — To raise the maximum number of running Grab cars around the country, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has opened 8,000 transport network vehicle service (TNVS) slots.

Grab said in a statement on Thursday that the additional TNVS seats became available on April 18, adding that new TNVS drivers will join Grab after completing “LTFRB-mandated onboarding procedures.”

“We expect additional TNVS drivers to be on the road in 2-3 months once the LTFRB TNVS online platform is ready to accept TNVS driver sign-ups,” Grab said.

The new TNVS slots are needed since the Covid-19 outbreak and the accompanying protracted suspension of ride-hailing and other forms of public transportation drove several TNVS drivers to give up their automobiles or seek alternative sources of income, according to the statement.

“This situation has produced a significant supply and demand mismatch for GrabCar, resulting in fewer GrabCar driver-partners on the road serving an ever-increasing number of passengers,” Grab claimed.

The LTFRB’s mandate includes serving as the principal regulator of TNVS and other forms of public transportation, allowing only licensed public utility vehicles to operate.

Grab has stated that the freshly opened batch is “insufficient” to meet public demand for Grab cars and that it will continue to seek additional slots from the LTFRB.
