MANILA – The Nacionalista Party publicly endorsed Majority Leader and Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez for Speaker of the incoming 19th Congress on Monday.

Presumptive senator Mark Villar, presidential son and incoming Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos, and Deputy Speaker Camille Villar made Romualdez a courtesy call in Makati City to formally announce their support.

According to Camille, Romualdez will be an important cog in the future administration’s goal of national unity and development.

“His exceptional record as Majority Floor Leader of the 18th Congress shepherding important legislation and forging consensus and harmony among the varied members of the House makes him well-suited for the Speakership,” she said.

Former President and House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, President Rodrigo Duterte’s PDP-Laban, presumptive Vice President Sara Duterte’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago, Nacionalista Party, and the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. all gave Romualdez, the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats president, their votes of confidence.

Other members of Congress have stated their support for Romualdez as the next Speaker.

Rep. Johnny Pimentel of Surigao del Sur said Romualdez is very capable, and that his record as House majority leader speaks for itself.

“Everyone is rooting for Congressman Romualdez to be the next Speaker,” Pimentel remarked. “Without a doubt, Congressman Romualdez possesses the required aptitude, expertise, and skill to lead the House.”

Meanwhile, CamSur Rep. LRay Villafuerte claimed the reelected Leyte congressman’s acceptance of the top House post has become a “fait accompli” with Arroyo’s endorsement, who was previously viewed as Romualdez’s most formidable competitor for the elective office.

“Martin’s election as Speaker just before BBM (Bongbong Marcos) gives his inaugural SONA (State of the Nation Address) in July is now a “fait accompli” with his support as Speaker by none other than GMA, who had been billed as his most serious competitor for the post,” Villafuerte added.

With Arroyo out of the race for Speaker and the overwhelming support of the House power blocs for Romualdez as Speaker, Villafuerte believes the transition from outgoing to incoming leadership in the larger house will be seamless.

“As a result, we expect Martin’s election as Speaker will go smoothly, allowing the Leyte legislator to get right to work at the commencement of the 19th Congress’ first regular session,” he stated.

“Romualdez’s exemplary performance as Majority Leader and consensus builder in the 18th Congress will ensure that the House can—and will—buckle down right away to work on, and secure majority support for, new legislation that will help BBM deliver on his campaign promise of inclusive growth for all Filipinos,” Villafuerte said.

“I will be returning to the House on June 30, 2022,” Arroyo was cited in the media as saying. As a result, I would like to inform members of the Lakas-CMD that I am endorsing Majority Leader Martin Romualdez for House Speaker in the upcoming Congress. I strongly encourage all members of our party to follow suit.”
