The ASF vaccination clinical trial in PH has progressed to the next stage.
MANILA – According to the Department of Agriculture, the clinical trial on vaccination against African swine fever (ASF) in the country has so far shown encouraging findings, with scientists entering the next phase of the trial.
DA Secretary William Dar stated in a press conference on Monday that an initial trial was successfully conducted from February 10 to May 6 in San Miguel, Bulacan, in partnership with the Bureau of Animal Industry and the Universal Robina Corporation.
“There were no clinical indications associated with ASF disease in the experiment, and there was limited non-ASF related mortality,” Dar stated.
The DA-BAI and Robina Corporation will now go on to the second part of the trial, which is expected to be completed by June.
“The result was excellent!” We were quite motivated. So, in Phase 2, we’ll put all of the vaccinated people in the previously infected farm that was affected by the ASF, where they’ll be highly challenged. We’ll feed them diseased blood and pancreas at the same time),” Universal Robina Corporation Director Dante Palabrica said in Filipino.
If the next phase produces positive results in June, Palabrica believes it will be a game-changer for the livestock business.
“Thailand estimates that its hog industry will take ten years to recover. They’ve dropped by half. For the Philippines, it will take eight years. However, this vaccination is a game-changer. We need this for the next five years, maybe we can get back to pre-pandemic levels,” he continued.
The ASF vaccine from Thailand, which has a shelf life of two to six months and can be stored at various temperatures, was employed by the DA-BAI and Universal Robina Corporation in particular.
Only 12 barangays have active instances of ASF thus far, compared to 3,774 afflicted barangays before the epidemic.
Meanwhile, Dar stated that the repopulation initiative should be stepped up in tandem with their efforts to find an effective ASF vaccine.
“One bright indicator is that the cattle sector only shrank by 1% in the first quarter, implying that the repopulation initiative is working,” he said.
