Velasco backs Romualdez for Speaker.
MANILA – Lord Allan Velasco endorsed House Majority Leader and Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez for Speaker of the 19th Congress on Tuesday.
“I am confident that his victory as Speaker of the 19th Congress will ensure that the incoming administration’s legislative program is pursued and finished. My friendship and support for Majority Leader Romualdez “During a meeting in Makati City, Velasco said.
The incumbent Speaker thanked Romualdez for assisting him in leading the House during the previous 18th Congress, noting that his strong leadership and support were instrumental in the passage of relevant and timely pandemic-response legislation as well as the approval of important laws that will have “immense impact to stir and sustain our economic growth and development” in the new normal.
“Under his leadership, the House was able to continue and carry out its mandate despite physical limits imposed by the epidemic through the adoption of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s priority legislative initiatives,” Velasco added.
Meanwhile, Romualdez thanked Velasco for his help.
“I appreciate your assistance. Thank you, Speaker Velasco, from the bottom of my heart “According to Romualdez.
The two House leaders also addressed the official canvass of the votes cast for president and vice president in the May 9 elections during their discussion.
The tabulation will take place on the House grounds at Quezon City’s Batasan complex. On Monday, Congress will reassemble.
The two leads stated that they anticipate a quick canvass and announcement of the victors.
Former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte won the presidential and vice-presidential elections on May 9 by a landslide, according to unofficial results.
Over the weekend, Velasco’s party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), proclaimed its support for Romualdez through its president, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi.
Cusi cited Romualdez’s track record of assisting the Duterte administration in the passage of key legislation, including the two Bayanihan laws, the coronavirus disease-19 (Covid-19) Vaccination Program Act, the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises Act, and amendments to the Retail Trade Liberalization Act and the Public Service Act.
“His track record is self-evident. He is, without a doubt, one of the most dedicated members of Congress. “We believe that Rep. Romualdez can bring together the various political parties and blocs in the House of Representatives to continue the Duterte administration’s legacy programs while also shepherding President-elect Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s vision for a more progressive Philippines in Congress,” Cusi said.
