According to Romualdez, Congress must protect the electoral process’ integrity.
MANILA – On Tuesday, House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez promised that Congress will “uphold the integrity of the electoral process” when it convened as the National Board of Canvassers.
As the House of Representatives and Senate began the official tabulation of voters who voted for president and vice president in the May 9 elections, Romualdez delivered the guarantee.
“Rest assured that we will safeguard the integrity of the electoral process as we carry out our constitutional duties. We will ensure that the voices of our fellow Filipinos, both at home and abroad, are heard and respected through their votes “In his opening remarks, Romualdez stated.
Romualdez has been named chairman of the NBOC’s House delegation.
Crispin Remulla, Cavite Rep. Abraham Tolentino, Pampanga Rep. Juan Bondoc, Marikina Rep. Stella Quimbo, Ilocos Sur Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan, and AAMBIS-OWA Party-list Rep. Sharon Garin make up the House contingent.
Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto, Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, Senator Nancy Binay, Senator Imee Marcos, Senator Grace Poe, and Senator Pia Cayetano make up the Senate delegation.
Once it begins, the canvassing of ballots cast by eligible Filipinos will last 24 hours until the presidential and vice presidential candidates are declared winners.
“As Chairperson of the House Committee on the Canvassing of Votes, I assure you that the meetings before this Committee on the Canvassing of Votes will be marked by accuracy, transparency, and expediency,” Romualdez remarked.
The preliminary operations of canvassing were carried out during the joint public session of Congress led by Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III and Speaker Lord Allan Velasco on Tuesday morning.
The majority of this was the opening of ballot boxes with certificates of canvass (COCs) from the overseas absentee voting (OAV) that took place a few days before the May 9 election.
“I join our fellow citizens in praying that the Filipino people’s sovereign will prevail and that our cherished freedom to choose our country’s next leaders is a real expression of the vibrant democracy we all enjoy,” he stated.
The Senate and the House of Representatives will canvass the votes for the presidential and vice-presidential elections in a joint public session under Article VII, Section 4 of the 1987 Constitution, after determining their legitimacy and due execution in the manner allowed by law.
Marcos won by a landslide with more than 31 million votes, while Robredo received 14.81 million votes, according to an unofficial calculation by the Commission on Elections.
