Chipping potato, which is used to make fries, is in short supply around the world: DA
MANILA, Philippines โ For several weeks, some fast-food establishments around the country have been battling a shortage of chipped potatoes.
Because suppliers have been late with delivery, John Van Lorino, 21, of a fast food crew in Cavite, said they had limited their serving quantities to ordinary sizes.
“For the past few months, ma’am, no fries stocks have arrived, not even those pouches for fries.” “We only get regular-sized pouches sent to us,” he explained to the PNA in Filipino. “That’s why [customers] can’t get giant or extra-large [fries].”
Lorino stated that this was the first time in his three years at the organization that he had encountered the situation. He did say, though, that their administration had not yet enforced any official measures.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) previously stated that there is a global shortage of processing potatoes, notably those used in fast food fries.
Filipino farmers primarily raise table potatoes, and developing such a type locally is not currently considered sustainable.
In a separate interview with the PNA, Agriculture Undersecretary Kristine Evangelista said, “Production of chipped potatoes is in its experimental stage, but so far the results are poor.”
Fast-food chains, according to Evangelista, are more likely to be affected by the limited availability.
“Mas nararamdaman po ‘yan sa mga fast food chains because’yung mga chipped potatoes po ang shortage po globally at’yan po ay inaangkat din po nation,” she stated over the phone.
She went on to say that the availability of locally grown table potatoes is consistent.
“In terms of (table) potatoes naman, wala pong shortage,” DA-Cordillera Region Agribusiness Division Chief Joan Bacbac told the PNA. “Actually, maganda po ang presyo (the price is good), from PHP40 the previous days, naging (it became) PHP33 siya, so maganda-ganda pa ang presyo (the price is quite good).”
