Under the BBM, four envoys promise to strengthen diplomatic and trade ties with the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines — President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. hosted ambassadors from Singapore, the United Kingdom, France, and the European Union at BBM headquarters in Mandaluyong City on Monday.

At around 9 a.m., Gerard Ho, Singapore’s ambassador to the Philippines, paid a visit to Marcos, followed by Ambassador Laure Beaufils of the United Kingdom.

Ambassador Luc Vèron of the European Union paid a visit at 11 a.m., followed by Ambassador Michelle Boccoz of France, who came about 12 p.m.

The envoys pledged to deepen trade and diplomatic connections, as well as their shared values in democracy, self-determination, and economic recovery, during their private sessions.

Following his meeting with Marcos, Ho spoke with the media about his brief encounter with the new president.

“As you may be aware, Singapore and the Philippines are close friends and partners. “Both Singapore and the Philippines are founding members of Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and successive generations of Singaporean and Philippine leaders have worked together for the region’s peace and prosperity,” Ho said in his press conference.

“In fact, during our previous chat with the president-elect, we discussed all of the conversations our founding father, Mr. Lee, and his father, Mr. Ferdinand Marcos, had about advancements in the region and how we should work together on it,” Ho added.

Ho also spoke about the two Asian countries’ economic improvements.

“With the return of cross-border travel and the passage of a number of key economic changes in the Philippines, we are hopeful that we will be able to continue to grow and flourish our bilateral economic relationship with the Philippines,” the ambassador said.

“We see a lot of growth potential in the Philippines,” Ho added, “and we want to see more and more Singapore companies enter the market.”

Ho also revealed that Singapore President Halimah Yacob had extended an invitation to Marcos to visit Singapore.

He added, however, that no details are available at this time because the two leaders’ schedules are still being discussed.

Meanwhile, Beaufils emphasized their country’s positive ties with the Philippines.

“So, I’m overjoyed that I just finished a meeting with the President-elect, which was quite beneficial, instructive, and warm. “I was able to demonstrate that the United Kingdom already has a very strong bilateral relationship with the Philippines, as well as a deep friendship between our countries and peoples, and that we aim to build on that throughout the president-administration,” elect’s Beaufils said.

“We were able to talk about areas of common interest where we want to collaborate more closely and develop, widen, and deepen our relationship.” “For example, as you know, the president-elect is very focused on the economy, and we were able to discuss what the UK has been doing in that arena and what more we would do to promote businesses, trade, investments, and infrastructure in particular,” she continued.

They also discussed climate change, energy, the Mindanao peace process, as well as human rights and media freedom, according to Beaufils.

“And I said I was extremely excited to work with the future administration,” Beaufils added.

Due to prior commitments, the ambassadors from France and the EU did not allow media interviews.

During separate sessions at BBM headquarters in Mandaluyong city last week, Marcos received the United States Chargé d’Affaires and the Ambassadors from Japan, South Korea, and India.

The envoys also promised Marcos that they would be willing to aid in hastening the country’s recovery from the pandemic’s consequences.
