CITY OF CAGAYAN DE ORO — On Monday, the provincial government of Misamis Oriental issued a temporary restriction on the admission of hogs and pork products from three districts in the Zamboanga Peninsula region.

The restriction was imposed after fresh instances of African swine fever (ASF) were discovered in Zamboanga City and Zamboanga Sibugay, according to Dr. Benjamin Resma, chief of the Provincial Veterinary Office (ProVet).

“ASF now impacts Zamboanga City and Zamboanga Sibugay, according to the Philippine ASF disease status.” It had already been established. As a result, we will not allow hogs or pork products from these places to enter the country,” Resma said in his weekly ASF report on Monday.

As part of their preventive steps against ASF, the province of Zamboanga del Sur, where Zamboanga City is physically located, is also covered by the prohibition.

Because most of the supply comes from Zamboanga, Resma declined to speculate on the possibility of a price hike for the popular roasted pig or “lechon baboy” here.

He had previously stated that the province was experiencing a shortage of live hogs.

ProVet’s monitoring team has been alerted to guarantee that no live hogs or pork products from ASF-affected areas are allowed to enter the province.

According to Resma, the province government has increased surveillance and monitoring to prevent the entry of poultry and by-products from Avian Influenza-affected areas.

In the last 60 days, he claimed, no new ASF cases have been discovered in the province.

In Misamis Oriental, the number of ASF-affected barangays remained at 104, spread across two cities and 19 municipalities.
