CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Bureau of Customs-Port of Cebu announced a PHP3.605 billion collection surplus for the month of May on Thursday.

BOC-Cebu collector Lawyer Charlito Martin Mendoza claimed the collection was 22.37 percent greater than the target of PHP2.946 billion, resulting in a PHP659.22 million surplus.

“With this five-month streak of exceeding monthly expectations, the port’s total revenues for 2022 are now at PHP16.221 billion, and the year now has a PHP2.78 billion surplus,” he added in a statement.

According to Mendoza, the BOC-May Cebu’s collection is the biggest in a single month, surpassing April’s record by PHP71.4 million.

The May 2022 revenue is PHP1.35 billion higher than the same month’s collection in 2021.

Mendoza boasted about a revenue collection increase of about 60%.

He credited the accomplishment to the bureau’s overall good governance changes and the personnel’s unwavering dedication to serve.

The BOC-Cebu chairman also credited the assistance of its stakeholders and partner government agencies for assisting them in fulfilling their mandate to collect duties and taxes while also assisting in the economic development of the country by combating smuggling.

Mendoza promised to keep improving Cebu’s customs revenue collection performance “by strictly enforcing valuation and classification standards, increasing the use of ICT tools to expedite cargo clearance, and engaging stakeholders on a regular basis to enhance customs compliance.”

Oil, coal, steel, cement, rice, palm olein, and rice importations, according to BOC-Cebu deputy collector for assessment Conrado Abarintos, are among the top contributors to tax collection.

The top five biggest income producers in the Port of Cebu, according to him, are Filoil Logistics Corp., Seaoil Philippines Inc., Steel Asia Manufacturing Corp., Ecossential Foods Corp., Joyland Industries Corp., and Apo Cement Corp.
