Duterte: Marcos Jr. requires everyone’s help

MANILA, Philippines — On Monday night, outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte urged Filipinos to “accept” the results of the May 9 elections, stressing that new officials, including President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., would require their collaboration to secure the country’s success.

“President-elect Marcos would require everyone’s participation and assistance. In his fourth-to-last Talk to the People, Duterte remarked, “We must give it to him.”

He stated that the public must recognize the majority’s decision, stating that this is the core of democracy.

“Sunod tayo pag nagsalita yung taongbayan kung sino yung mga leader na gusto nila.” Iwasan ninyo ang politika (We must follow the people’s decision on who they want as their leader.) He went on to say, “Avoid politicking.”)

Duterte stated that Filipinos must be “unified” in dealing with challenges such as the current Covid-19 health crisis and post-pandemic rehabilitation.

“Politics and acts that divide the country have no place here.” The people have spoken, we have a leader, and I am about to depart (The people have spoken, we have a leader, and I am about to leave). “I’m not going to say anything,” he said.

He believes it is inappropriate to “just plain criticize” the new administration, which has yet to enact any policies or programs.

“Ang ayaw ko, baka may maiwan pa, yung namumulitika pa rin, yung namumulitika pa rin, yung namumulitika pa rin, yung namumulitika pa (What I dislike is that there may be some left who continue politicking). Or, you know, simply critique itong bagong administrasyon plain and simple (this new administration). That’s something you don’t do,” he added.

Transition is smooth and quiet.

Duterte informed the nation that he would hand over power to his successor in a “smooth” and “peaceful” manner.

“As of June 30 approaches, our administration is both prepared and excited to give over the reins of government to our new leaders. “I tell everyone that this process will be smooth and peaceful,” he said. “We want the new administration to flourish for the country’s good.”

He stated that the nation and people can only overcome the country’s issues through unity and compassion.

“My fellow Filipinos, the incoming administration will require our full cooperation and support. Let us, therefore, extend our best wishes and well wishes to them as they strive to lead our country to a brighter future,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, he thanked Filipinos once again for their support during his six-year presidency.

“It was a successful and beneficial trip for the people of my country, with the cooperation of people from all sectors who I thought early on might help us construct a brighter future for our children,” he said. “Maraming maraming salamat sa inyong pagbigay ng tiwala sa kin (Thank you very much for your trust in me),” he expressed his gratitude.

Duterte stated that his primary goal is to leave a better country for future generations by implementing his policies and initiatives, particularly his administration’s fight against criminality and illegal narcotics.

“If I had any advocacy, it would be to safeguard the next generation,” he remarked.

He expressed his desire to withdraw from politics but added that if there is a “compelling reason,” he will continue to speak.

“I will speak if there is a compelling reason for me to do so.” But, truly, all I want to do is retire quietly. “I’m done with politics,” he continued.

On May 25, Marcos was sworn in as the 17th President of the Philippines in the Batasan Pambansa in Quezon City.

Sara Duterte, the daughter of outgoing President Duterte and Marcos’ running companion for the 2022 national elections, was also named the country’s 15th vice president.

Through the parties they created, the Marcos-Sara, termed UniTeam, brought together the country’s biggest and oldest political lineages.

Duterte will leave the office at 12 p.m. on June 30. Marcos, the son of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, will succeed him.
