In PH, the NPC plans to establish a “strong culture of privacy.”

MANILA, Philippines โ€” The National Privacy Commission (NPC) has committed to continue defending the Filipino people’s data privacy rights through its Data Privacy Act of 2012 awareness campaign (DPA).

NPC Commissioner John Henry Naga said in a statement on Friday that the NPC wants to continue educating Filipinos about data privacy, security, and protection.

“The NPC will continue to adopt initiatives, reforms, and projects to help the Philippines develop a strong privacy culture,” Naga added.

He said the NPC held 21 events and projects, 359 stakeholder consultation meetings, 308 social media campaigns, and five Data Protection Officer – Accountability, Compliance, and Ethics (DPO-ACE) trainings as part of its wide awareness campaign during Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) last May.

“The PAW 2022 conference brought together speakers from both government and private institutions to discuss topics like information security on social media, protecting data privacy in schools, VaxCertPh, establishing trust in online lending, online banking safety, ensuring child safety in the online world, and cybercrime in the Philippines, including emerging trends, prevention, prosecution, and remedies,” he said.

He urged people to protect themselves from “threats and risks” by reading up on data privacy through educational resources on the NPC website, performing a “privacy check” on their internet accounts, and sharing their data privacy information with friends, family, and peers.

He also urged people to report “data privacy infractions” both online and offline, as well as to “be an advocate by completing little privacy-friendly tasks.”

“All of these safeguards have a substantial impact on the evolution of the Philippines’ privacy culture,” he said.

The PAW culminated in a two-day conference on May 25 and 26 with the topic “Ang PAWer ng Data Privacy Mo: Praktikal, Angkop at Wastong Paggamit ng Datos ni Juan at Juana.”

According to Presidential Proclamation No. 527 signed by President Rodrigo Duterte in 2018, the PAW is an annual celebration.
