Which Hermit Crab Species Are Appropriate for Saltwater Aquariums?
For many years, hermit crabs have been a common pet choice for both adults and kids. Many people find their distinctive appearance endearing, while others do not—taste is a factor. It is no surprise that the idea of adding hermit crabs to a saltwater aquarium has been gaining appeal given the rising popularity of bringing a piece of the sea into the home.
There are numerous breeds of fish that may be kept in aquariums, just as there are numerous varieties of hermit crabs that can be kept as pets. However, not all hermit crabs have the same chances of surviving in captivity, so it’s crucial for the aquarium owner to be aware of all of their unique requirements before introducing them to the aquarium. The most popular breeds of hermit crabs for aquariums are described below.
- Red Hermit Crab (Dardanus megistos): This crab has red legs with black-edged spots, and it is also known as the White Spotted Hermit Crab. In a community aquarium, it is highly helpful in reducing the amount of algae development even though it is not a safe addition to a reef aquarium. These crabs are fiercely possessive of their personal space; only one crab per aquarium, please.
The Red-Legged Hermit Crab (Clibanarius digueti), tough addition to any aquarium that eats algae from the tank, is from Mexico. However, because their bodies cannot survive in the presence of this metal, they require a low quantity of copper in the water.
- The Scarlet Hermit Crab, also known as the Reef Hermit Crab (Paguristes cadenati), is a little hermit crab with a scarlet body and yellow eyestalks. They are particularly effective in controlling the growth of algae inside the aquarium; however, if there is not enough algae present, dried seaweed must be added to their diet as a supplement.
- Common Hermit Crab (Pagurus bernhardus): Although more prevalent in Europe, these crabs can also be found in other nations. Likewise called the soldier crab.
It’s crucial that these crabs always have new shells available to them as they outgrow their current ones since they carry their homes around on their backs. A hermit crab cannot develop correctly in a shell that is too small. If the owner is aware of the needs of their hermit crabs, they may frequently be discovered on a beach. These shells can be bought from a pet store, an online vendor, or a hermit crab. It is crucial that the owner selects the right kind of shell for their hermit crab to live in if they decide to go out into the wild and gather their own shells. Since sea anemones frequently play a significant role in the hermit crab’s natural habitat, they make great tank companions since they eat the leftovers after the hermit crab finishes its meal and reduce the amount of waste produced in the tank.
Once their owners are familiar with their needs and habits, hermit crabs are an interesting addition to any aquarium and require very little upkeep. They can have a long life with the right care, giving their owners and their family countless hours of pleasure.
