Lahar flow is caused by heavy rains on Mount Bulusan.
Early on Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that a small-volume lahar discharge had been seen in Mount Bulusan.
Phivolcs stated in an advisory at 1 a.m. that the lahar flow started on Sunday at 7:04 p.m. During a time of thunderstorms over the province of Sorsogon, this continued for 54 minutes.
The main channel draining the southwest slopes of Bulusan, Calang Creek, is located in Barangay Cogon, Irosin, according to Phivolcs. “Ocular research by the Bulusan Volcano Observatory verified thin channel-confined lahar deposits along Calang Creek,” he stated.
According to Phivolcs, seven volcanic earthquakes triggered by the movement or eruption of magma from the volcano were observed over the course of the previous day.
On June 26, sulfur dioxide emissions were 559 tons per hour, with moderate plume heights reaching 150 meters.
Over Mount Bulusan, Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest) is still in effect.
During periods of intense and protracted rainfall, those who live in valleys and along river/stream channels, particularly on the southeast, southwest, and northwest slopes of the volcano edifice, should exercise caution to avoid lahars and stream flow that are clogged with silt.
Phivolcs also reminded local government entities and the general public to exercise extreme caution when entering the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone and to keep a close eye on the 2-kilometer extended danger zone in the southeast sector due to the increased likelihood of sudden and dangerous phreatic eruptions.
Additionally, aviation officials are instructed to advise pilots to steer clear of flying near the volcano’s top because any abrupt phreatic eruption could produce ash that could endanger planes.
