Pangasinan Solon praises PBBM’s assistance to the creative sector

The inaugural State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. included a specific mention of the creative industry, which Pangasinan 4th District Representative Christopher de Venecia applauded and advocated for the approval of the proposed Freelance Workers Protection Act (House Bill 8817).

Freelancers make up a large portion of the creative industry, according to De Venecia, and Marcos’ SONA announcement is an indication of support for them.

De Venecia stated in a statement on Monday that “the President is resolved to implement the Philippine Creative Industries Development Act to its fullest.”

De Venecia is the deputy majority leader of the 18th Congress and the chair of the Committee on Creative Industry and Performing Arts.

He is one of the main architects of House Bill 8817, which intends to add a number of important requirements for the protection of independent contractors, such as the requirement of written contracts when hiring their services and the payment of hazard pay and night shift difference, he said.

On third reading, the House approves the Freelance Workers Protection Act.

Marcos acknowledged the nation’s skill pool and the industry’s ability to expand job possibilities in his first SONA.

According to him, protecting the creatives who have been jokingly referred to as the ones that give the Filipino identity soul calls for an organized, creative industry that would advance the interests of its stakeholders.

He admitted that they still face many difficulties with regard to working conditions, hours, and intellectual property rights and that independent contractor were also exposed at the height of the pandemic.

De Venecia also praised Marcos’ plans for promoting tourism in the nation as outlined in his SONA.

The extra focus on Filipino travel, he added, “is most welcome because it points to a transformation in how we handle and convey tourism countrywide.”

De Venecia also praised the President and his advisors for their focus on the economy’s value chains, which are matched by subsidized inputs and production boosts, as well as their use of science to advance cattle farming and raising.

He added, “I also took notice of the agriculture sector priority on improving production value chains, new techniques for cultivating crops and rearing livestock and establishing access to credit for farmers.

He also applauded the need to develop a new breed of farmers, one that is not simply forward-thinking in terms of innovation but also includes agricultural youth, as well as the national network of farm-to-market highways.

In relation to it, he pleaded for the bill establishing the Young Farmers and Fisherfolk Challenge Program to be passed.

De Venecia was the author of House Bill 9575, also known as the young farmers and fisherfolk challenge program bill, which sought to establish programs to assist and empower the young Filipino farmers and fisherfolk to work alongside the government to achieve food security, agricultural development, and modernization.

Additionally, it aims to inspire youngsters to take an active role in agriculture.
