Gas pipeline Baltic Pipe opens to lessen reliance on Russia.

Tuesday’s event in Szczecin, Poland, marked the formal opening of the Baltic Pipe natural gas pipeline.

Leaders from Poland, Norway, and Denmark were present at the event marking the start of the gas transmission line, which they believe would reduce Poland’s and Europe’s reliance on Russian gas.

According to the government, Terje Aasland, the minister of petroleum and energy for Norway, called it “an essential step on the vital road to Europe’s independence from Russian energy.”

He continued by commending Mateusz Morawiecki, the prime minister of Poland, for initiating the initiative years earlier, “far before most people grasped the necessity of European energy independence.”

Long before Russia invaded Ukraine in February of this year, which led to an energy crisis, the project was started by Poland in 2016 following the Crimean War.

The roughly 900 km (559 mi) pipeline will carry natural gas from Norway to Poland via Denmark and the Baltic Sea.

Aasland stated that the pipeline, which has an annual capacity of 10 billion cubic meters of gas, “can carry gas from the Norwegian continental shelf reserves and help enhance energy security in southern Scandinavia, Poland, and other countries in the vicinity.”

According to the statement, the minister accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of trying to weaken Europe’s unity by using energy as a weapon.

After Danish and Swedish officials discovered many gas leaks in the Russian-owned Nord Stream pipelines, the Baltic Pipe was finally opened.

The two Nordic countries have officially established that the leaking was caused by powerful underwater explosions, allaying suspicions of sabotage.
