Dinagat guv bares successes in infrastructure rehabilitation and livelihood.
To coincide with the celebration of Sunday’s 16th Charter Day of the Province of Dinagat Islands, Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. celebrated his first 100 days in office.
Seven months after Typhoon Odette’s devastation in 2021, Demerey remarked, “we worked hard and have accomplished a lot in resolving many difficulties and worries affecting the lives of the people of Dinagat.”
He claimed that his administration also strongly emphasized ensuring the livelihood of thousands of farmers and fishermen in the island province, in addition to continuing to repair the key facilities devastated by the typhoon.
On Gibusong Island in Loreto, a Marine Fish Sanctuary worth PHP300,000 was built as part of the province’s Fishery Development Program.
A total of 41 fiberglass fishing boats with engines were also given out to the island’s afflicted fishermen in collaboration with other non-governmental groups.
According to Demerey, “for over 100 days, we implemented a total of PHP2,331,820 in programs and projects for developing our fishing and agriculture sectors in the province.
To improve citizens’ access to food security, household gardening was also strengthened throughout the province during this time.
998 family farmers in the various towns each received 3,992 bags of various vegetable seeds.
The province government also allocated PHP1,099,470 for the purchase of fertilizer and other tools for the household gardening project.
The allocation of farm production tools and equipment by the provincial government helped to support rice production in the province.
Meanwhile, ten knapsack sprayers, ten wheelbarrows, and two mini cultivators were distributed to nine farmers’ associations in the towns of Cagianao, Dinagat, San Jose, Basilisa, Libjo, and Loreto.
Additionally, ten rolls of 100-meter pipes worth PHP645,500 each were given to farmers in Libjo and Basilisa to install an irrigation system for commercial vegetable cultivation.
Demerey added that the federal government and Senator Sherwin Gatchalian’s office provided funding for Dinagat’s infrastructure.
The PHP50 million road in Basilisa and Libjo, the PHP50 million road in Barangay Benglen, Libjo, the PHP100 million shoreline protection in San Jose, and the PHP20 million farm-to-market roads in Dinagat, Cagdianao, Libjo, and San Jose are among the projects included in the 2023 General Appropriations Act.
San Jose people were through a water crisis around that time, and the provincial government responded to it as well.
Typhoon Odette badly destroyed the local water district’s infrastructure, making it impossible to supply the capital city with enough water.
According to Demerey, “the provincial government lent the water district a generator set that could pump 300 to 600 cubic meters of water each day.”
The restoration of 24-hour power services on the island followed negotiations with the National Power Corporation.
Rep. Alan 1 Ecleo of Dinagat’s sole constituency and Vice Governor Benglen Ecleo were acknowledged by Demerey for their contributions to the success of Dinagat’s first 100 days of government.
Glenda Ecleo, a former representative, wrote Republic Act 9355, which made the Dinagat Islands a province in 2006.
