POPCOM advocates for additional senior health programs.
On Wednesday, a representative of POPCOM called for increased attention to be paid to the institutionalization of comprehensive health services for seniors.
Although long-term government initiatives exist for seniors living in institutions or families, POPCOM officer-in-charge (OIC) Executive Director Lolito Tacardon said these interventions should be pushed to the community level.
According to a news release he issued, “There should be local initiatives for community-based rehabilitation to address elderlies’ infirmities.”
Tacardon suggested that for the programs to be successful, local governments must actively expand the range of health care available to the elderly.
To develop comprehensive policies on health, socioeconomic, and other issues specifically targeting seniors, he stated, “We at POPCOM will work closely with legislators, local policymakers, and government leaders.”
Before this, Prof. Grace Cruz of the University of the Philippines-Population Institute (UPPI) predicted that by the start of the following decade, the nation would experience an “aging society.”
Cruz informed Juan Antonio Perez, a former executive director of PopCom, that the proportion of older people would rise by 10%.
Perez, who recently celebrated the International Day of Older Persons by attending a conference in Bangkok, Thailand, stated in a recent radio interview that women make up 55 percent of the nation’s senior citizens, compared to men, who make up 45 percent.
“Although elder Filipinas live longer than their male counterparts, the former face illnesses, and infirmities. More than half (57%) suffer mobility impairments and struggle with everyday functioning. While 70% of men are either still married or have partners and are highly physically active, almost 56% have already become widows.
By 2030, the number of persons 60 and older is predicted to outweigh children 0 to 4 years old by around 11%, reversing the historical pattern of the country having more children than older people.
The newest statistics provided by the Philippine Statistics Authority show that elderly citizens currently make up 9.2 million people or 8.5 percent of the total population.
