To stop incidences of prejudice, the Philippine National Police (PNP) committed on Tuesday to expand programs encouraging cultural and religious awareness in police officers.

Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., head of the PNP, also expressed regret in a televised appearance for allegedly discriminating against the prisoners involved in the hostage-taking on Sunday that put the life of former senator Leila de Lima in danger.

This came after Senator Robin Padilla criticized the facility after viewing a video in which responding police officers could be heard repeatedly referring to the detainees as “Muslims,” a behavior he deemed discriminatory.

“Yeah, we’ll attempt to figure out what to call them. If I may say so, from what I saw in that particular instance, the adrenaline was pumping quickly, as it did during previous operations. It was underlined because you must identify or characterize the suspect when responding. This is done so that our cops can recognize the target of the operation right away, “explained Azurin.

Additionally, he reaffirmed that they would take Padilla’s remarks into account.

“It’s a good point, and we’ll work to fix any problems with how the suspects were identified in this event, according to Azurin.

Arnel Cabintoy, Feliciano Sulayao, and Abduljihad Susukan were three prisoners who died while attempting to flee the PNP Custodial Center. De Lima was kept hostage by Sulayao.

Azruin responded, “Maybe it would be best if we just detain them in the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines),” when asked where terrorists should be held.

He continued, “So we can be confident that they are in a maximum security institution.”

As part of tighter measures, the PNP previously stated that a buddy system would be implemented for police officers stationed in the PNP Custodial Center.

In addition, Azurin has given the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group instructions to look into the Custodial Center’s physical security and assess the facility’s normal operating procedures.
